White Hat Link Building – Protect Your Website From Being Penalized

Introduction:

What if you get a 50+ DA in less than 6 months using fast link-building techniques (also known as black hat)? How does that make you feel? Amazing, right?

Now again, imagine you have just invested six whole months in establishing your website’s authority, and one day, it vanished from the internet. How does that make you feel now?

Devastated, I know!

But this nightmare is a reality for many websites that engage in black hat link building. Google penalizes over 400,000 websites monthly for manipulative link building. Semrush also shared a study where they analyzed websites that received penalties, and the #1 reason for that was manipulative backlinks.

Now the question arises: how can websites build high-quality backlinks within a timeframe of 3-6 months without getting any Google penalties? The answer is “white hat link-building.” What does it mean, and how can you improve your website’s ranking and develop a strong backlink profile using white-hat link building techniques? That is what we are going to dissect in this blog.

Let’s begin!

What is white hat link building?

White hat link building is a strategy for improving search rankings and building high domain authority (DA). It involves building quality backlinks while following Google’s webmaster guidelines.

Google really cares about its users, so this is about creating great content that people want to link to, okay? So, you should be building links that improve the usability and the user experience of Google, rather than trying to game or manipulate the system.

For businesses, especially those in competitive industries like a digital marketing agency for startups, white-hat link-building plays a crucial role in establishing long-term authority and credibility.

Why does link-building matter?

There are two main reasons:

#1 – Backlinks are key ranking factors in Google’s algorithm.

#2 – Studies show that websites with higher positions in Google have more quality backlinks.

Google ranks websites based on several factors, including a strong backlink profile. Google assesses your site’s worth based on a number of high domain authority websites that link back to you. One of the ways to do it is by creating valuable content to which reputable sites want to link back. In this way, Google is more likely to trust and rank you, boosting your visibility and organic traffic. This can ultimately fall you among high-domain authority sites.

White Hat vs. Black Hat vs. Grey Hat link building?

The other two unfavorable methods of link building are black hat link building and gray hat link building. While black hat link building (e.g., PBNs, getting paid backlinks) is entirely unacceptable, gray hat falls between and is considered mildly harmful to your website. For instance, creating a high-quality blog or infographic and getting paid backlinks afterward falls under gray hat link building.

So why jeopardize your website while trying to climb the ladder quickly?

Google strictly warns websites not to follow any manipulative techniques that could lead to shutting your website down.

Furthermore, Google doesn’t penalize websites instantly; they analyze your website over a specific period, and, in terms of consistent manipulative, automated, and paid activities, you ultimately receive a penalty.

So, what does Google have to say about link spam?

All the tactics that Google mentioned above in its update fall under black hat link building.

“Link building is like a marathon, not a sprint. If you cheat, you’ll get caught.”Neil Patel.

Core principles of white hat link building

A. Getting quality links

One of the core principles of building white hat links is to find ways to create quality content that naturally attracts links from high-domain websites. Quality always surpasses quantity. Instead of generating 10 low-quality content pieces, make 1 that is top-notch and gets into the limelight

“Links from top-tier domains (DA 70+) generate 5x more traffic than low-quality links” (Ahrefs, 2023).

B. Getting links from relevant domains

While getting high-quality links is necessary, creating relevant backlinks should be your priority. For instance, a fitness blog earning links from health magazines is more likely to achieve a high ranking than one that obtains links from irrelevant tech forums.

Many websites undermine the impact of context and relevance, focusing instead on obtaining links that can do more harm than good – such as acquiring bulk links from a third party.

“A link from a relevant niche site is worth 100 irrelevant ones.”Brian Dean (Backlinko).

C. Natural link acquisition

Always focus on an ethical link-building approach. This method promotes long-term relevance, authority, and trust – both with Google and users.

Focus on earning links via:

  • Content marketing (e.g., Digital PR, data-driven studies, infographics etc).
  • Relationship-building (e.g., collaborating with industry influencers, ethical link exchange etc).

07 Ways To Do White Hat Link-Building

I will share 07 highly effective white hat link-building techniques below, but the best part is yet to come. They will cost you $0. Great?

Again, free doesn’t mean ineffective; these methods are highly effective and utilized by prominent sites like The New York Times, HubSpot, Inc.com, and Search Engine Journal.

Let’s dig in!

1. The Fixer Upper

The first technique is fixer-upper.  In this method, you’re gonna look for articles in your same niche that have a lot of backlinks. Preferably ones that are older and might reference outdated facts.

For example, You write an updated blog on advanced SEO tactics that help you attract quality backlinks after researching 20+ blogs that topped for your keyword. Now, you must find websites that can link to your content piece.

Step 1: Google the keyword. Let’s take “blog commenting guide,” And check the backlink profile of the first results that pops up.

fixer upper is the 1st out of 7 practice of white hat link building

The guide we find here has 144 referring domains and 408 backlinks, which is quite good! But it’s from 2022. That means it might contain outdated data.

screen shot of semrush showing backlinks and refering domains of a website.

Step 2: Next, you’ll figure out who is linking to this article using a tool like Semrush, Ahrefs, or the free trial of Ubersuggest. Here’s what a backlink report looks like for that blog comment article in Semrush.

screen shot of semrush showing backlink profile of a website.

Step 3: Now you have got the target. The website that published this blog has DA 46. And I am sure they want to keep their blog updated as it attracts many reference domains.

Step 04:

Now that you have identified the blog. Now you have got two strategies.

Number 01:

You send them an email pitch asking them to link to your up-to-date article.

First, you go over to their contact page and snag the press email.

Then you send them an email like this,

Outreach Email:

“Hey Pro Blogger Team,

This article you wrote, [insert URL], is referencing some outdated advice.

You recommend blog commenting as a viable way to build quality links.

But this article from Search Engine Journal quotes a Google employee saying that it ‘doesn’t work anymore and hasn’t for a long time.’

We at [Your Company] have just published an updated guide covering the latest link-building techniques.

I believe your readers will find it insightful, as it complements the topics you’ve discussed and offers a fresh perspective with the latest strategies.

Here’s the link to our guide: [Your Article Link]

Would you consider including a link to our article in your post? It would offer additional value to your content with updated information and offer your readers a valuable resource.

I would love to write you a paragraph if it helps!

[Your Name]

Number 02:

But most of the time, they are your competitors, and they would never want to move their traffic to your blog (Strategy #01). Instead, it gives them a heads-up to update their content as if it were getting good traffic.

In that case, you choose the strategy #02.

  • You will simply check the websites linking back to that outdated blog and send them an email pitching that the site they are linking to has outdated information that is no longer helpful or applicable today. You can easily find their email using hunter.io.
screenshot of hunter.io the tool use to outreach.
  • Before pitching anything to them, refer to core principle #02 (Relevance). Check if the website is relevant to you. If it’s not, let it be. If it is, then go ahead and pitch.
  • Also, get links from unique referring domains rather than getting 10 or more links from the same domain.

Once you identify the websites, email them and inform them that they have outdated links in your blog that they can replace with an “Updated resource” that offers more value to their readers.

This strategy works better than #01 because these websites have no definitive reason not to link back to updated resources, which builds their credibility. Nevertheless, you never know what might work for you.

2- Article Roundup

Articles roundups are well-researched and detailed publications on specific products or services. It’s one of the high-converting techniques to get quality backlinks from highly authoritative websites.

In 2025, adding links to existing high-ranking content (niche edits) is far more valuable and effective than guest posting for acquiring backlinks and achieving good rankings.

To find your niche article roundups, look for posts that recap top content in your niche by using the following search terms:

  • Keyword + link roundup
  • Keyword + best of
  • This week + keyword
  • This month + keyword
image showing link roundups search terms.

This way, you can discover websites creating roundups through blogs or newsletters. This allows your content to be published, enabling you to benefit from high Domain Authority (DA) websites and obtain quality backlinks.

Once you find the website, obtain their email and pitch them to include your content in their weekly or monthly roundup.

Outreach Email:

Hey [Recipeinet name],

I just finished up a piece of content on SEO optimization that would be a great fit for your SEO news roundup.

It highlights 5 tested ways that AI can be used to build rankable content.

If you could include it in your round up, I’d be more than happy to share that roundup with my audience and encourage my readers to subscribe.

Thanks so much.

3- Linkable assets

A- Research/data studies

To encourage people to link back to your website, it’s important to have valuable resources such as research studies or data analyses that others can cite in their blogs, resulting in a link back to you. This might include studies that provide essential information that assists in solving a problem for your audience. When your content is helpful, other websites and bloggers are more likely to reference it, which can drive traffic to your site.

B- Tools

Developing something that helps people and that they are willing to link to requires extensive research on the audience’s needs and pain points. You need to understand who your audience is and what they care about. This means ensuring that the resources you create are tailored to their interests and needs. By doing this, you can keep them more engaged. The more they feel your content speaks to them, the more likely they are to share or link it.

For example:

  • Developing calculators – Calculators are user-friendly and serve a practical purpose, which attracts many links from other sites looking to provide value to their users.

C- Infographics

Creating well-researched and informative infographics increases your chances of getting backlinks.

  • Websites create infographics that contain original research, and it attracts a lot of backlinks because many websites, bloggers, and research studies need to cite original research. It’s a goldmine for them if they get it cooked and served from any website in shareable formats.
  • Secondly, most websites, instead of creating their infographics, use them from other resources, and in return, they get a backlink. This practice is less applicable now because Canva and other tools make it easy for content creators to generate personalized infographics.

Just provide value.

4. Broken Link Building

Finding broken links means looking through websites to spot hyperlinks that lead to pages that no longer work, often showing a “404 Not Found” error.

After identifying these broken links, the next step is to contact the website owners and explain how these broken links affect their site while suggesting your content as a replacement.

This strategy helps both the website owner, who needs to fix their links, and you, as you offer valuable content to improve their site.

To make this strategy more effective, focus on content that has been recently updated.

Ensure this content is valuable and relevant by replacing old references with updated articles.

This increases the chances that website owners will appreciate your content. This approach improves the website and ensures visitors get the most updated information, improving their experience and increasing your online visibility.

5. Link Exchanges

Mutual benefits

The idea behind a link exchange is to create a mutually advantageous situation where both parties gain from sharing backlinks. When two websites agree to link to each other, they can improve their respective SEO (Search Engine Optimization) rankings, increase traffic, and boost their online visibility. The websites involved in the exchange must be relevant to one another’s content, as this relevance is a factor that search engines consider when evaluating the quality of a link.

For example, linking a fitness blog to a nutrition blog can benefit both sites if the link provides value to their audiences.

No excessive link exchange

While link exchanges can be useful, they must be approached with moderation. Excessive link trading can trigger penalties from search engines like Google, which monitor link-building practices closely. These penalties can adversely affect a website’s ranking, potentially demoting its visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs). Hence, never overdo link exchanges.

Guidelines

Always follow Google’s link-building guidelines. Google recommends that links be acquired naturally, meaning they should come from real endorsements instead of from exchanges or trades. It’s important to avoid excessive link exchanges; links shouldn’t be your only method for building authority. Instead, treat link building as part of a wider SEO strategy that includes creating quality content, reaching out organically, and engaging users. This approach will help keep your site in good standing with search engines and attract relevant visitors.

A great way for link exchange is writing content for each other’s websites or collaborating to produce a single, well-researched or original content piece

6. Guest Posting

hilarious depiction of writing guest post

Writing a guest post for a highly authoritative website and inserting your link is another widely used white hat link-building technique that can generate quality links and increase traffic.

There are a lot of websites that allow guest posting without charging money, which falls under white-hat link building. The goal is to create a content piece that makes people want to visit your website. If you are only writing for the sake of a link, then simply doing a guest post will suffice. However, to boost your traffic, put in extra effort. This adds value to both the host website and yours.

You can find your niche website via various methods;

7. Digital PR

First, let me share what “Steve Rayson” has to say about worthy content;

quote of steve rayson about content

If you want journalists to share your content/stories, focus on content that has the following qualities;

  • Has the most potential, which means people are actively searching for
  • Less covered by AI models (Should contain depth)
price perception of products with utility vs. hedonism copy
showcasing the digital pr link building
  • Contains original research that can’t be replicated or created by AI.
what 15 ceos learned building top agencies.
  • Lastly, consider what would grab the attention of readers and news outlets. You might observe the most newsworthy aspects in the area where this business is established (again, this depends on your client and industry). For instance, you could write a detailed article on the history of that specific place holds;
Case Study: Digital PR to build 56 backlinks in 30 days - By Ricky (Owner of Digital PR)

Case Study: Digital PR to build 56 backlinks in 30 days – By Ricky (Owner of Digital PR)

The team of digital PR worked with a brand in the wellness space and earned 56 links in the first 30 days of working with them. That campaign then earned them over 100 links without any additional outreach.

Here’s how they did it and how you can, too.

The team of digital PR worked with a brand in the wellness space and earned 56 links in the first 30 days of working with them. That campaign then earned them over 100 links without any additional outreach.

First, they came up with an idea relevant to the client and their audience.

The client was in the wellness space, and the whole purpose of their product was to reduce stress. They could have gone down the expert comment route, for example, having an expert share tips on managing stress.

However, that approach seemed a little crowded. Instead, they looked for government data on stress or similar topics.

They asked their team what made them stressed, and the team suggested everything from driving their car and paying bills to health-related concerns and many more topics.

They then created a comprehensive spreadsheet with all these suggestions and sought data that could be utilized.

For instance, they searched for “Road rage statistics for stress while driving”.

Some of this data did not exist, which left them with two options: they could either carry out a FOI request or continue searching. They chose to keep looking.

Eventually, they found 24 different data sources that could be used to create a ranking.

They could now weigh their ranking or keep it equally weighted based on the data collected. From this point, they could score each town, city, state, or any other entity they had chosen to rank. They ensured it was easy to understand and share.

For the client, they didn’t have access to the client’s site to create a linkable asset. So, they packaged the data in a Google Doc and sent a pitch to journalists who wrote about stress.

They started to pick up links within a day of the pitch, which was usually a good sign. This effort earned them 56 DR and 70+ links on the first day of client work.

A few weeks later, they noticed that the client was getting mentioned in the news again, even though they hadn’t published anything else or conducted further outreach.

Overall, they landed over 100 links from top-tier publications such as CNBC, Express, MSN, Newsweek, The Tennessean, Yahoo, and many more.

As a result, the client’s search traffic skyrocketed. The client’s new site went from 110 monthly visitors to over 6,000. Not bad for one campaign.

All you need to do is:

– Come up with an idea

– Find data around that idea

– Write a press release and pitch it to journalists

– Repeat until you land links

Conclusion

SEO is the backbone of both new and established websites. What’s crucial should be done correctly. That’s why, instead of taking shortcuts like black-hat link building, focus your efforts on ethical SEO practices; like building quality backlinks through white-hat link building. Paid traffic works for only a short period, but if you want to maintain consistent traffic without spending money, develop a long-term and sustainable SEO link-building strategy.
